This monopod is built pretty sturdily. You could definitely use it as a walking stick. With the 3d swivel head that you can attach to the base of your camera and leave the base attached so you can quickly attach the monopod to it. The swivel tilt head has a thread adapter so if the outer thread is too big for your camera, the inner thread (adapter) should work. For a 40D the adapter is not needed.
